The Solution: Modern Cleaner Cookstoves

We will follow this report this week and post the 'solutions' that may be helpful to you!  Bless you - we love you guys.

News from “Be the Change” - http://saveone.net
Indoor smoke from cooking, know as the “Kitchen Killer”, accounts for 1.6 million deaths annually and 2.7% of global disease. Throughout the week we will be looking at different designs for improved cookstoves that can help play a role in improving the health in half the people around the world.

The World Health Organization has found that indoor air pollution from cooking is one of the top ten global health risks.
More than three billion people worldwide depend on solid fuels, including biomass (wood, dung and agricultural residues) and coal, to meet their most basic energy needs. The inefficient burning of solid fuels on an open fire or traditional stove indoors creates a dangerous cocktail of hundreds of pollutants, primarily carbon monoxide and small particles, but also nitrogen oxides, benzene, butadiene, formaldehyde, polyaromatic hydrocarbons and many other health-damaging chemicals. Day in day out, and for hours at a time, women and their small children breathe in amounts of smoke equivalent to consuming two packs of cigarettes per day.

Inhaling indoor smoke doubles the risk of pneumonia and other acute infections of the lower respiratory tract among children under five years of age. Women exposed to indoor smoke are three times more likely to suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), such as chronic bronchitis or emphysema, than women who cook with electricity, gas or other cleaner fuels. And coal use doubles the risk of lung cancer, particularly among women.

Yet, these families are faced with an impossible dilemma: don't cook with solid fuels, or don't eat a cooked meal.

Practical solutions to the indoor smoke problem must reduce pollution levels substantially to curb disease. Switching from wood, dung or charcoal to more efficient modern fuels, such as kerosene, LPG and biogas, brings about the largest reductions in indoor smoke. Also changing behaviors can also reduce exposure to indoor smoke. Many alternative cookers are currently on the market, with more popping up every day.

Alternative Clean Cookers Include:
Briquettes and Pellets
Solar Cookers
Biogas
Liquified Petroleum Gas

Sun powered Water Well

Africa Needs CDC’s Engineering Team has developed and designed a water delivery project that will provide the developing nations much needed access to clean water. The system is defined as the Sun-powered Water Well; it uses the number one energy provider, the sun, to be able deliver the ground water to the people. The above diagram consists of a solar pump that is at least 20 - 50 feet above the groundwater level and elevation tank. The solar pump uses the suns energy and pumps the ground water an estimated head of 62 feet with an efficiency that is above 80 percent. After the water goes through the suction and discharge pipes, it will end up in the elevation tank. There are controlled systems placed inside the inlet and outlet pipe in order to control the flow rate. After the controlled system that is placed inside the outlet pipe is opened, the water will travel downward due to potential energy that is created by the gravitational force and atmospheric pressure. Finally, the residents who reside in villages or small towns can drink clean water using the faucet. According to the Africa Needs Engineers who designed the diagram and according project, the system is designed for a town or a village that has an estimated population between 1,000 to 10,000 people. We have used data that estimates a rural population in a developing nation will use 20 gallons of water per capita daily unlike the developed nations which use 200 gallons per capita daily. The Sun-powered Water Well is an efficient way to deliver clean, drinkable water to the villagers.  The website is http://africaneeds.org/sun-powered-water-well/.

The method of missions (Oswald Chambers)

“Go ye therefore, and teach (disciple) all nations.”  Matthew 28:19
Jesus Christ did not say – God and save souls (the salvation of souls is the supernatural work of God), but – “go and teach”, i.e., disciple, “all nations”, and you cannot make disciples unless you are a disciple yourself.  When the disciples came back from their first mission they were filled with joy because the devils were subject to them and Jesus said – Don’t rejoice in successful service; the great secret of joy is that you are rightly related to me.  The great essential of the missionary is that he remains true to the call of God, and realizes that his one purpose is to disciple men and women to Jesus.  There is passion for souls that does not spring from God, but from the desire to make converts to our point of view.
The challenge to the missionary does not come on the line that people are difficult to get saved, that backsliders are difficult to reclaim, that there is a wadge of callous indifference; but along the line of his own personal relationship to Jesus Christ.  “Believe ye that I am able to do this?”  Our Lord puts that question steadily; it faces us in every individual case we meet.  The one great challenge is – Do I know my Risen Lord?  Do I know the power of His indwelling Spirit?  Am I wise enough in God’s sight, and foolish enough according to the world, to bank on what Jesus Christ has said, or am I abandoning the great supernatural position, which is the only call for a missionary, viz., boundless confidence in Christ Jesus?  If I take up any other method I depart altogether from the methods laid down by Our Lord – “All power is given unto Me…, therefore go ye.”
